Anxiety is a natural response to stress and can be beneficial in some situations, helping us stay alert and focused. It can also be an important sign that we might be over-worked, run down, and not taking care of ourselves and, for many people, anxiety can become overwhelming and debilitating, interfering with daily activities and overall quality of life. There are multiple factors that contribute to the development of anxiety disorders, including physiological functioning, genetic predisposition, brain chemistry, personality, life events, trauma, spiritual crisis and life transitions. People with anxiety disorders often experience intense, excessive, and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations, can feel physically activated, tense and stressed in their bodies, become emotionally reactive and feel disconnected from their normal sense of self.
