WHAT IS EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy widely used to help people heal from traumatic experiences, distressing emotions and events that have hurt them in the past. It can also help to reduce anxiety, negative responses and fear about the future. Sometimes our minds get "stuck" on painful events and fears, replaying them over and over. EMDR can help your brain and nervous system process this naturally, so they lose their emotional sting and become easier to handle by reducing the distress, fear and angst connected to them.
HOW CAN EMDR HELP?
Think of your brain like a filing cabinet. Usually, it's pretty good at organising experiences and putting them away properly. But when something traumatic happens—like a significant life event, accident, relationship breakdown, abuse, or loss—your brain's filing system gets overwhelmed. These painful memories get stuck in the "urgent" tray, where they keep triggering distress even though the danger has passed.
EMDR helps your brain finish the filing process, moving these memories to where they belong—in the past.
WHAT HAPPENS IN AN EMDR SESSION?
EMDR is safe and you can be assured you are in good hands. Our team of EMDR practitioners are all registered Psychologists who are appropriately trained in EMDR, trauma therapy and psychological health. They are excellent at holding space and ensuring you are safe and well-supported. We are client led so we listen to you and take things at your own pace.
During the course of EMDR therapy, every client receives an individual and highly curated plan that they create with their therapist. We will assess your core areas of need, belief networks, internal resources, map your target memories and events, and practice nervous system regulation strategies. When you are ready to begin processing your target events, we bring them to mind and then use bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, watching an online light stream, butterfly taps) to process them. We'll do this for short bursts, then pause to check in about what you're noticing. Many people are surprised by how natural and comfortable this feels. You'll stay fully awake and in control the entire time—you can stop whenever you need to.
As we continue, you'll often notice the painful memory starts to feel less intense, like watching an old movie that doesn't upset you anymore and your nervous system will begin to adjust to a less activated state whereby you can remember the event without feeling as disturbed by it anymore.
IS EMDR SAFE AND WILL I FEEL IN CONTROL?
Absolutely. You're the driver in this process—our Psychologists are just the guides. You'll remain completely alert and aware throughout. You can pause or stop anytime you need to. Most people find EMDR surprisingly empowering because the healing comes from within you. Your mind will offer up the information that needs to be processed and clients learn to truly trust themselves and their ability to heal.

WHY CHOOSE EMDR?
Unlike some therapies, you don't have to tell our therapists all the details of what happened to you. EMDR works directly with how your brain stores memories, so we can heal the wound without having to keep reopening it. Many clients find this much more comfortable than having to repeatedly talk through their trauma.

WE OFFER AN EMDR INTENSIVE PROGRAM
Some clients have 1-4 specific targets they need to process and are keen to spend less time in therapy and just get the "job" done. They have held onto distressing emotional responses for "too long" and feel like they are ready to let them go. We suggest they use our EMDR intensive program. This is a short, structured program consisting of pre-booked and carefully planned weekly or bi-weekly sessions to allow for maximum benefit in minimum time. We can work through selected targets that need processing in a more efficient way because sessions are more frequent, processing leads easily from one session into the next, the client can prioritise their healing for a short period of time which can help them focus on self-care and the shorter time frame may reduce other life "things" getting in the way of healing. In addition, intensive sessions are 90 minutes long so your processing is uninterrupted for longer periods of time.
Of course, some clients require therapy alongside EMDR, they might have multiple traumas or life events to process, have complex needs and need long term support. We suggest regular weekly therapy/EMDR for these clients.
WHO IS THIS FOR?
The EMDR Intensive Therapy Program is designed for people who have experienced one or two adverse life events that have impacted their confidence, self-esteem, and relationships. It is also suitable for those who, despite trying to work through things, feel stuck in their personal progress, have difficulty letting go, moving forward or feel that something is missing from their therapy. The program is highly individualised and targets specific memories associated with psychological distress, aiming to deliver rapid resolution of painful emotions associated with the memories.
WHY WE OFFER AN INTENSIVE EMDR PROGRAM
EMDR intensives are designed to be completed within 4-6 weeks and can help facilitate effective and efficient resolutions to psychological concerns. The processing phases are prolonged (up to 90 minutes per session), which can help achieve a positive outcome in a shorter period of time. EMDR therapy enhances the body and mind's natural ability to process stored events and can change the way we view, feel and experience both our past and present-day life.
